Henrietta Lacks’ story and life go on…

By Chauntel Duren

GROSSMONT COLLEGE – There is a story that will probably go on for  years.  It is about Henrietta Lacks, who is still living 60 years after her death — through her cells.  How can that be?

Henrietta Lacks was born in the 1920’s into a poor,  southern African-American family.  She was diagnosed with terminal  cancer in 1951 and was treated at Johns Hopkins University.  She did not survive the cancer.

But while she was being treated the  doctor took cells from her cervix without her consent and those cells have been used in over 60,000 studies.  Her cells are so well-known, they  even have a nickname: He-La cells.  They have been used in research  on polio, cancer, AIDS and other diseases.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE–Thousands cheered as newly graduated Grossmont Griffins received long-awaited acknowledgement of their achievements.  An estimated 1,500 students received degrees, certificates or in some cases both, at a ceremony June 1 in the Main Quad.

Student speaker Timothy Snowball shared his turbulent educational journey, with a crowd estimated at 4,000–a journey that now brings him to having been graduated from Grossmont with honors, with Associate’s Degrees in Political Science and University Studies.  Snowball indeed had a chance in hell, having weathered Depression and Anxiety Disorder and having dropped out of high school; thereafter, whenever he spoke to friends and co-workers about returning to school, they scoffed at him.

Undeterred, he spent three years at Grossmont, along the way having joined Phi Theta Kappa, an international academic honors society.  He said that his eventual aim is a degree in Law.  Between then and now, he said that he plans to gain a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.  For this leg of his life’s race, Snowball has won acceptance to UCSD, UCLA and UC Berkeley.  Now, he can take his pick.

GROSSMONT COLLEGE (Press Release)– More than 2,100 students will be receiving their degrees or certificates from East County’s two community colleges next week, capping a challenging year marked by the state’s ongoing budget crisis and launching the start of Grossmont College’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.

Grossmont Collegewill honor 1,504 students receiving associate’s degrees and certificates of achievement Wednesday, June 1 at the 50th annual commencement at the college’s main quad. On Thursday, June 2, Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego will laud 619 students receiving their degrees and certificates at the college’s 33rd commencement at the student center quad. Both celebrations are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Both colleges in the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District have had to deal with three years of state budget reductions that have led to major funding losses and the cutting back of hundreds of classes, potentially delaying students’ educational progress.
