SIU may lay off tenured faculty

CARBONDALE, Illinois (USANN4)–Tenured professors could soon be laid off at one Illinois institution.   Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will be able to lay off tenured faculty members under the terms of a one-year contract it imposed on its faculty union.   The contract allows the cash-strapped university to circumvent the usual procedure, requiring a formal declaration of fiscal crisis to lay off the tenured.

It also calls for faculty members to take four unpaid furlough days during the current academic year.   The school’s faculty association plans to file a complaint, accusing the university of committing unfair labor practices.

Female college grads outnumber males

WASHINGTON, D.C. (USANN4)–Women are overtaking men when it comes to college degrees.   New census figures show American women have passed men in gaining advanced degrees as well as bachelor’s degrees.   The new findings come as record numbers of women are in the workplace and fewer women are stay-at-home mothers.

Among adults 25 and older, 10-point-6 million U.S. women have master’s degrees or higher, compared with 10-point-5 million men.   Just over 20 million women have bachelor’s degrees, compared with 18-point-7 million men.   Women first passed men in bachelor’s degrees in 1996.
